Now, three wronged women are about to reveal the toxic world of sexual harassment in a workplace environment, bent on bringing down the powerful CEO. President Richard Nixon from 1972 to 1974 that led to Nixon's resignation. The scandal stemmed from the Nixon administration's subsequent attempts to cover up its involvement in the June 17, 1972 failed break-in of the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Washington, D. C. Watergate Office Building. After the five perpetrators were arrested, the press and the U. Justice Department connected the cash found on them at the time to the Nixon re-election campaign committee. [1] [2] Further investigations, along with revelations during subsequent trials of the burglars, led the U. House of Representatives to grant its judiciary committee additional investigation authority to probe into "certain matters within its jurisdiction, " [3] [4] and the U. Senate to create a special investigative committee. The resultant Senate Watergate hearings commenced were broadcast "gavel-to-gavel" nationwide by PBS and aroused public interest. [5] Witnesses testified that the president had approved plans to cover up administration involvement in the break-in, and that there was a voice-activated taping system in the Oval Office. [6] [7] Throughout the investigation, the administration resisted its probes, which led to a constitutional crisis. [8] Several major revelations and egregious presidential action against the investigation later in 1973 prompted the House to commence an impeachment process against Nixon. [9] The U. Supreme Court ruled that Nixon must release the Oval Office tapes to government investigators. The tapes revealed that Nixon had conspired to cover up activities that took place after the break-in and had attempted to use federal officials to deflect the investigation. [10] [11] The House judiciary committee then approved articles of impeachment against Nixon for obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and contempt of Congress. With his complicity in the cover-up made public and his political support completely eroded, Nixon resigned from office on August 9, 1974. It is believed that, had he not done so, he would have been impeached by the House and removed from office by a trial in the Senate. [12] [13] He is the only U. president to have resigned from office. On September 8, 1974, Nixon's successor, Gerald Ford, pardoned him. There were 69 people indicted and 48 people—many of them top Nixon administration officials—were convicted. [14] The metonym Watergate came to encompass an array of clandestine and often illegal activities undertaken by members of the Nixon administration, including: bugging the offices of political opponents and people of whom Nixon or his officials were suspicious; ordering investigations of activist groups and political figures; and using the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Central Intelligence Agency, and the Internal Revenue Service as political weapons. [15] The use of the suffix " -gate " after an identifying term has since become synonymous with public scandal, especially political scandal. [16] [17] [18] [19] [20] Wiretapping of the Democratic Party's headquarters [ edit] During the break-in, E. Howard Hunt and G. Gordon Liddy remained in contact with each other and with the burglars by radio. These Chapstick tubes outfitted with tiny microphones were later discovered in Hunt's White House office safe. Transistor radio used in the Watergate break-in Walkie-talkie used in Watergate break-in DNC filing cabinet from the Watergate office building, damaged by the burglars On January 27, 1972, G. Gordon Liddy, Finance Counsel for the Committee for the Re-Election of the President (CRP) and former aide to John Ehrlichman, presented a campaign intelligence plan to CRP's Acting Chairman Jeb Stuart Magruder, Attorney General John Mitchell, and Presidential Counsel John Dean that involved extensive illegal activities against the Democratic Party. According to Dean, this marked "the opening scene of the worst political scandal of the twentieth century and the beginning of the end of the Nixon presidency". [21] Mitchell viewed the plan as unrealistic. Two months later, Mitchell approved a reduced version of the plan, including burgling the Democratic National Committee 's (DNC) headquarters at the Watergate Complex in Washington, D. —ostensibly to photograph campaign documents and install listening devices in telephones. Liddy was nominally in charge of the operation, [ citation needed] but has since insisted that he was duped by both Dean and at least two of his subordinates, which included former CIA officers E. Howard Hunt and James McCord, the latter of whom was serving as then-CRP Security Coordinator after John Mitchell had by then resigned as Attorney General to become the CRP chairman. [22] [23] In May, McCord assigned former FBI agent Alfred C. Baldwin III to carry out the wiretapping and monitor the telephone conversations afterward. [24] McCord testified that he selected Baldwin's name from a registry published by the FBI's Society of Former Special Agents to work for the Committee to re-elect President Nixon. [ citation needed] Baldwin first served as bodyguard to Martha Mitchell —John Mitchell's wife, who was living in Washington. [ citation needed] Baldwin accompanied Martha Mitchell to Chicago. [ citation needed] Eventually the Committee replaced Baldwin with another security man. [ citation needed] On May 11, McCord arranged for Baldwin, whom investigative reporter Jim Hougan described as "somehow special and perhaps well known to McCord", [ citation needed] to stay at the Howard Johnson's motel across the street from the Watergate complex. [ citation needed] Room 419 was booked in the name of McCord's company. [ citation needed] At behest of Liddy and Hunt, McCord and his team of burglars prepared for their first Watergate break-in, which began on May 28. [25] Two phones inside the DNC headquarters' offices were said to have been wiretapped. [26] One was Robert Spencer Oliver 's phone. At the time, Oliver was working as the executive director of the Association of State Democratic Chairmen. The other phone belonged to DNC chairman Larry O'Brien. The FBI found no evidence that O'Brien's phone was bugged; [ citation needed] however, it was determined that an effective listening device was installed in Oliver's phone. While successful with installing the listening devices, the Committee agents soon determined that they needed repairs. They plotted a second "burglary" in order to take care of the situation. [26] Sometime after midnight on Saturday, June 17, 1972, Watergate Complex security guard Frank Wills noticed tape covering the latches on some of the complex's doors leading from the underground parking garage to several offices, which allowed the doors to close but stay unlocked. [ citation needed] He removed the tape, believing it was nothing. [27] When he returned a short time later and discovered that someone had retaped the locks, he called the police. [27] Responding to the call was an unmarked car with three plainclothes officers (Sgt. Paul W. Leeper, Officer John B. Barrett, and Officer Carl M. Shoffler) working the overnight "bum squad"—dressed as hippies and on the lookout for drug deals and other street crimes. [28] The burglars' sentry across the street, Alfred Baldwin, was distracted watching TV and failed to observe the arrival of the police car in front of the hotel. [28] Neither did he see the plainclothes officers investigating the DNC's sixth floor suite of 29 offices. By the time Baldwin finally noticed unusual activity on the sixth floor and radioed the burglars, it was already too late. [28] The police apprehended five men, later identified as Virgilio Gonzalez, Bernard Barker, James McCord, Eugenio Martínez, and Frank Sturgis. [22] They were charged with attempted burglary and attempted interception of telephone and other communications. The Washington Post reported that "police found lock-picks and door jimmies, almost $2, 300 in cash, most of it in $100 bills with the serial numbers in sequence... a short wave receiver that could pick up police calls, 40 rolls of unexposed film, two 35 millimeter cameras and three pen-sized tear gas guns". [29] The following morning, Sunday, June 18, G. Gordon Liddy called Jeb Magruder in Los Angeles and informed him that "the four men arrested with McCord were Cuban freedom fighters, whom Howard Hunt recruited". Initially, Nixon's organization and the White House quickly went to work to cover up the crime and any evidence that might have damaged the president and his reelection. [30] On September 15, 1972, a grand jury indicted the five office burglars, as well as Hunt and Liddy, [31] for conspiracy, burglary, and violation of federal wiretapping laws. The burglars were tried by a jury, with Judge John Sirica officiating, and pled guilty or were convicted on January 30, 1973. [32] Cover-up and its unraveling [ edit] Initial cover-up [ edit] Address book of Watergate burglar Bernard Barker, discovered in a room at the Watergate Hotel, June 18, 1972 Within hours of the burglars' arrest, the FBI discovered E. Howard Hunt 's name in Barker and Martínez's address books. Nixon administration officials were concerned because Hunt and Liddy were also involved in a separate secret activity known as the " White House Plumbers ", which was established to stop security " leaks " and investigate other sensitive security matters. Dean later testified that top Nixon aide John Ehrlichman ordered him to " deep six " the contents of Howard Hunt's White House safe. Ehrlichman subsequently denied this. In the end, Dean and the FBI's Acting Director L. Patrick Gray (in separate operations) destroyed the evidence from Hunt's safe. Nixon's own reaction to the break-in, at least initially, was one of skepticism. Watergate prosecutor James Neal was sure that Nixon had not known in advance of the break-in. As evidence, he cited a conversation taped on June 23 between the President and his Chief of Staff, H. Haldeman, in which Nixon asked, "Who was the asshole that did that? " [33] However, Nixon subsequently ordered Haldeman to have the CIA block the FBI's investigation into the source of the funding for the burglary. A few days later, Nixon's Press Secretary, Ron Ziegler, described the event as "a third-rate burglary attempt". On August 29, at a news conference, Nixon stated that Dean had conducted a thorough investigation of the incident, when Dean had actually not conducted any investigations at all. Nixon furthermore said, "I can say categorically that... no one in the White House staff, no one in this Administration, presently employed, was involved in this very bizarre incident. " On September 15, Nixon congratulated Dean, saying, "The way you've handled it, it seems to me, has been very skillful, because you—putting your fingers in the dikes every time that leaks have sprung here and sprung there. " [22] Kidnapping of Martha Mitchell [ edit] In June 1972, during a phone call with United Press reporter Helen Thomas, Martha Mitchell informed Thomas that she was leaving her husband until he resigned from the CRP. [34] The phone call ended abruptly. A few days later, Marcia Kramer, a veteran crime reporter of the New York Daily News, tracked Mitchell to the Westchester Country Club in Rye, New York, and described Mitchell as "a beaten woman" with visible bruises. [35] Mitchell reported that, during the week following the Watergate burglary, she had been held captive in the Watergate Complex hotel, and that security guard Steve King ended her call to Thomas by pulling the phone cord from the wall. [35] [34] Mitchell made several attempts to escape via the balcony, but was physically accosted, injured, and forcefully sedated by a psychiatrist. [36] [37] Following conviction for his role in the Watergate burglary, in February 1975, McCord admitted that Mitchell had been "basically kidnapped, " and corroborated her reports of the event. [38] Money trail [ edit] On June 19, 1972, the press reported that one of the Watergate burglars was a Republican Party security aide. [39] Former Attorney General John Mitchell, who was then the head of the CRP, denied any involvement with the Watergate break-in. He also disavowed any knowledge whatsoever of the five burglars. [40] [41] On August 1, a $25, 000 (approximately $153, 000 in 2019 dollars) cashier's check was found to have been deposited in the US and Mexican bank accounts of one of the Watergate burglars, Bernard Barker. Made out to the Finance Committee of the Committee to Reelect the President, the check was a 1972 campaign donation by Kenneth H. Dahlberg. This money (and several other checks which had been lawfully donated to the CRP) had been directly used to finance the burglary and wiretapping expenses, including hardware and supplies. Mr. Barker's multiple national and international businesses all had separate bank accounts, which he was found to have attempted to use to disguise the true origin of the money being paid to the burglars. The donor's checks demonstrated the burglars' direct link to the finance committee of the CRP. Donations totalling $86, 000 ($526, 000 today) were made by individuals who were deluded that they were making private donations by certified and cashier's checks for the president's re-election. Investigators' examination of the bank records of a Miami company run by Watergate burglar Barker revealed an account controlled by him personally had deposited a check and then transferred it (through the Federal Reserve Check Clearing System). The banks that had originated the checks were keen to ensure the depository institution used by Barker had acted properly in ensuring the checks had been received and endorsed by the check's payee, before its acceptance for deposit in Bernard Barker's account. Only in this way would the issuing banks not be held liable for the unauthorized and improper release of funds from their customers' accounts. The investigation by the FBI, which cleared Barker's bank of fiduciary malfeasance, led to the direct implication of members of the CRP, to whom the checks had been delivered. Those individuals were the Committee bookkeeper and its treasurer, Hugh Sloan. As a private organization, the committee followed the normal business practice in allowing only duly authorized individuals to accept and endorse checks on behalf of the Committee. No financial institution could accept or process a check on behalf of the committee unless a duly authorized individual endorsed it. The checks deposited into Barker's bank account were endorsed by Committee treasurer Hugh Sloan, who was authorized by the Finance Committee. However, once Sloan had endorsed a check made payable to the Committee, he had a legal and fiduciary responsibility to see that the check was deposited only into the accounts named on the check. Sloan failed to do that. When confronted with the potential charge of federal bank fraud, he revealed that committee deputy director Jeb Magruder and finance director Maurice Stans had directed him to give the money to G. Gordon Liddy. Liddy, in turn, gave the money to Barker and attempted to hide its origin. Barker tried to disguise the funds by depositing them into accounts in banks outside of the United States. Unbeknownst to Barker, Liddy, and Sloan, the complete record of all such transactions was held for roughly six months. Barker's use of foreign banks in April and May 1972, to deposit checks and withdraw the funds via cashier's checks and money orders, resulted in the banks keeping the entire transaction records until October and November 1972. All five Watergate burglars were directly or indirectly tied to the 1972 CRP, thus causing Judge Sirica to suspect a conspiracy involving higher-echelon government officials. [42] On September 29, 1972, the press reported that John Mitchell, while serving as Attorney General, controlled a secret Republican fund used to finance intelligence-gathering against the Democrats. On October 10, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein reported that the FBI had determined that the Watergate break-in was part of a massive campaign of political spying and sabotage on behalf of the Nixon re-election committee. Despite these revelations, Nixon's campaign was never seriously jeopardized; on November 7, the President was re-elected in one of the biggest landslides in American political history. Role of the media [ edit] The connection between the break-in and the re-election committee was highlighted by media coverage—in particular, investigative coverage by The Washington Post, Time, and The New York Times. The coverage dramatically increased publicity and consequent political and legal repercussions. Relying heavily upon anonymous sources, Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncovered information suggesting that knowledge of the break-in, and attempts to cover it up, led deeply into the upper reaches of the Justice Department, FBI, CIA, and the White House. Woodward and Bernstein interviewed Judy Hoback Miller, the bookkeeper for Nixon's re-election campaign, who revealed to them information about the mishandling of funds and records being destroyed. [43] [1] Garage in Rosslyn where Woodward and Felt met. Also visible is the historical marker erected by the county to note its significance. Chief among the Post's anonymous sources was an individual whom Woodward and Bernstein had nicknamed Deep Throat; 33 years later, in 2005, the informant was identified as William Mark Felt, Sr., deputy director of the FBI during that period of the 1970s, something Woodward later confirmed. Felt met secretly with Woodward several times, telling him of Howard Hunt's involvement with the Watergate break-in, and that the White House staff regarded the stakes in Watergate as extremely high. Felt warned Woodward that the FBI wanted to know where he and other reporters were getting their information, as they were uncovering a wider web of crimes than the FBI first disclosed. All the secret meetings between Woodward and Felt took place at an underground parking garage somewhere in Rosslyn over a period from June 1972 to January 1973. Prior to resigning from the FBI on June 22, 1973, Felt also anonymously planted leaks about Watergate with Time magazine, the Washington Daily News and other publications. [1] [44] During this early period, most of the media failed to understand the full implications of the scandal, and concentrated reporting on other topics related to the 1972 presidential election. [45] Most outlets ignored or downplayed Woodward and Bernstein's scoops; the crosstown Washington Star-News and the Los Angeles Times even ran stories incorrectly discrediting the Post's articles. After the Post revealed that H. Haldeman made payments from the secret fund, newspapers like the Chicago Tribune and the Philadelphia Inquirer failed to publish the information, but did publish the White House's denial of the story the following day. [46] The White House also sought to isolate the Post's coverage by tirelessly attacking that newspaper while declining to criticize other damaging stories about the scandal from the New York Times and Time Magazine. [46] [1] After it was learned that one of the convicted burglars wrote to Judge Sirica alleging a high-level cover-up, the media shifted its focus. Time magazine described Nixon as undergoing "daily hell and very little trust". The distrust between the press and the Nixon administration was mutual and greater than usual due to lingering dissatisfaction with events from the Vietnam War. At the same time, public distrust of the media was polled at more than 40%. [45] Nixon and top administration officials discussed using government agencies to "get" (or retaliate against) those they perceived as hostile media organizations. [45] Such actions had been taken before. At the request of Nixon's White House in 1969, the FBI tapped the phones of five reporters. In 1971, the White House requested an audit of the tax return of the editor of Newsday, after he wrote a series of articles about the financial dealings of Charles "Bebe" Rebozo, a friend of Nixon. [47] The Administration and its supporters accused the media of making "wild accusations", putting too much emphasis on the story, and of having a liberal bias against the Administration. [1] [45] Nixon said in a May 1974 interview with supporter Baruch Korff that if he had followed the liberal policies that he thought the media preferred, "Watergate would have been a blip. " [48] The media noted that most of the reporting turned out to be accurate; the competitive nature of the media guaranteed widespread coverage of the far-reaching political scandal. [45] Applications to journalism schools reached an all-time high in 1974. [45] Scandal escalates [ edit] Rather than ending with the conviction and sentencing to prison of the five Watergate burglars on January 30, 1973, the investigation into the break-in and the Nixon Administration's involvement grew broader. "Nixon's conversations in late March and all of April 1973 revealed that not only did he know he needed to remove Haldeman, Ehrlichman, and Dean to gain distance from them, but he had to do so in a way that was least likely to incriminate him and his presidency. Nixon created a new conspiracy—to effect a cover-up of the cover-up—which began in late March 1973 and became fully formed in May and June 1973, operating until his presidency ended on August 9, 1974. " [49] On March 23, 1973, Judge Sirica read the court a letter from Watergate burglar James McCord, who alleged that perjury had been committed in the Watergate trial, and defendants had been pressured to remain silent. In an attempt to make them talk, Sirica gave Hunt and two burglars provisional sentences of up to 40 years. Urged by Nixon, on March 28, aide John Ehrlichman told Attorney General Richard Kleindienst that nobody in the White House had prior knowledge of the burglary. On April 13, Magruder told U. attorneys that he had perjured himself during the burglars' trial, and implicated John Dean and John Mitchell. [22] John Dean believed that he, Mitchell, Ehrlichman, and Haldeman could go to the prosecutors, tell the truth, and save the presidency. Dean wanted to protect the president and have his four closest men take the fall for telling the truth. During the critical meeting between Dean and Nixon on April 15, 1973, Dean was totally unaware of the president's depth of knowledge and involvement in the Watergate cover-up. It was during this meeting that Dean felt that he was being recorded. He wondered if this was due to the way Nixon was speaking, as if he were trying to prod attendees' recollections of earlier conversations about fundraising. Dean mentioned this observation while testifying to the Senate Committee on Watergate, exposing the thread of what were taped conversations that would unravel the fabric of the conspiracy. [50] Two days later, Dean told Nixon that he had been cooperating with the U. attorneys. On that same day, U. attorneys told Nixon that Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Dean, and other White House officials were implicated in the cover-up. [22] [51] [52] On April 30, Nixon asked for the resignation of Haldeman and Ehrlichman, two of his most influential aides. They were both later indicted, convicted, and ultimately sentenced to prison. He asked for the resignation of Attorney General Kleindienst, to ensure no one could claim that his innocent friendship with Haldeman and Ehrlichman could be construed as a conflict. He fired White House Counsel John Dean, who went on to testify before the Senate Watergate Committee and said that he believed and suspected the conversations in the Oval Office were being taped. This information became the bombshell that helped force Richard Nixon to resign rather than be impeached. [53] Writing from prison for New West and New York magazines in 1977, Ehrlichman claimed Nixon had offered him a large sum of money, which he declined. [54] The President announced the resignations in an address to the American people: In one of the most difficult decisions of my Presidency, I accepted the resignations of two of my closest associates in the White House, Bob Haldeman, John Ehrlichman, two of the finest public servants it has been my privilege to know. Because Attorney General Kleindienst, though a distinguished public servant, my personal friend for 20 years, with no personal involvement whatsoever in this matter has been a close personal and professional associate of some of those who are involved in this case, he and I both felt that it was also necessary to name a new Attorney General. The Counsel to the President, John Dean, has also resigned. [55] On the same day, April 30, Nixon appointed a new attorney general, Elliot Richardson, and gave him authority to designate a special counsel for the Watergate investigation who would be independent of the regular Justice Department hierarchy. In May 1973, Richardson named Archibald Cox to the position. [22] Senate Watergate hearings and revelation of the Watergate tapes [ edit] On February 7, 1973, the United States Senate voted 77-to-0 to approve 93 60 and establish a select committee to investigate Watergate, with Sam Ervin named chairman the next day. [22] The hearings held by the Senate committee, in which Dean and other former administration officials testified, were broadcast from May 17 to August 7, 1973. The three major networks of the time agreed to take turns covering the hearings live, each network thus maintaining coverage of the hearings every third day, starting with ABC on May 17 and ending with NBC on August 7. An estimated 85% of Americans with television sets tuned into at least one portion of the hearings. [56] On Friday, July 13, 1973, during a preliminary interview, deputy minority counsel Donald Sanders asked White House assistant Alexander Butterfield if there was any type of recording system in the White House. [57] Butterfield said he was reluctant to answer, but finally admitted there was a new system in the White House that automatically recorded everything in the Oval Office, the Cabinet Room and others, as well as Nixon's private office in the Old Executive Office Building. On Monday, July 16, 1973, in front of a live, televised audience, chief minority counsel Fred Thompson asked Butterfield whether he was "aware of the installation of any listening devices in the Oval Office of the President". Butterfield's revelation of the taping system transformed the Watergate investigation. Cox immediately subpoenaed the tapes, as did the Senate, but Nixon refused to release them, citing his executive privilege as president, and ordered Cox to drop his subpoena. Cox refused. [58] "Saturday Night Massacre" [ edit] On October 20, 1973, after Cox refused to drop the subpoena, Nixon ordered Attorney General Elliot Richardson to fire the special prosecutor. Richardson resigned in protest rather than carry out the order. Nixon then ordered Deputy Attorney General William Ruckelshaus to fire Cox, but Ruckelshaus also resigned rather than fire him. Nixon's search for someone in the Justice Department willing to fire Cox ended with the Solicitor General Robert Bork. Though Bork said he believed Nixon's order was valid and appropriate, he considered resigning to avoid being "perceived as a man who did the President's bidding to save my job". [59] Bork carried out the presidential order and dismissed the special prosecutor. These actions met considerable public criticism. Responding to the allegations of possible wrongdoing, in front of 400 Associated Press managing editors at Disney's Contemporary Resort [60] [61] on November 17, 1973, Nixon emphatically stated, "Well, I'm not a crook. " [62] [63] He needed to allow Bork to appoint a new special prosecutor; Bork chose Leon Jaworski to continue the investigation. Legal action against Nixon Administration members [ edit] On March 1, 1974, a grand jury in Washington, D. C., indicted several former aides of Nixon, who became known as the " Watergate Seven "— H. Haldeman, John Ehrlichman, John N. Mitchell, Charles Colson, Gordon C. Strachan, Robert Mardian, and Kenneth Parkinson —for conspiring to hinder the Watergate investigation. The grand jury secretly named Nixon as an unindicted co-conspirator. The special prosecutor dissuaded them from an indictment of Nixon, arguing that a President can be indicted only after he leaves office. [64] John Dean, Jeb Stuart Magruder, and other figures had already pleaded guilty. On April 5, 1974, Dwight Chapin, the former Nixon appointments secretary, was convicted of lying to the grand jury. Two days later, the same grand jury indicted Ed Reinecke, the Republican Lieutenant Governor of California, on three charges of perjury before the Senate committee. Release of the transcripts [ edit] President Nixon explaining release of edited transcripts, April 29, 1974 The Nixon administration struggled to decide what materials to release. All parties involved agreed that all pertinent information should be released. Whether to release unedited profanity and vulgarity divided his advisers. His legal team favored releasing the tapes unedited, while Press Secretary Ron Ziegler preferred using an edited version where " expletive deleted " would replace the raw material. After several weeks of debate, they decided to release an edited version. Nixon announced the release of the transcripts in a speech to the nation on April 29, 1974. Nixon noted that any audio pertinent to national security information could be redacted from the released tapes. [65] Initially, Nixon gained a positive reaction for his speech. As people read the transcripts over the next couple of weeks, however, former supporters among the public, media and political community called for Nixon's resignation or impeachment. Vice President Gerald Ford said, "While it may be easy to delete characterization from the printed page, we cannot delete characterization from people's minds with a wave of the hand. " [66] The Senate Republican Leader Hugh Scott said the transcripts revealed a "deplorable, disgusting, shabby, and immoral" performance on the part of the President and his former aides. [67] The House Republican Leader John Jacob Rhodes agreed with Scott, and Rhodes recommended that if Nixon's position continued to deteriorate, he "ought to consider resigning as a possible option". [68] The editors of The Chicago Tribune, a newspaper that had supported Nixon, wrote, "He is humorless to the point of being inhumane. He is devious. He is vacillating. He is profane. He is willing to be led. He displays dismaying gaps in knowledge. He is suspicious of his staff. His loyalty is minimal. " [69] The Providence Journal wrote, "Reading the transcripts is an emetic experience; one comes away feeling unclean. " [70] This newspaper continued that, while the transcripts may not have revealed an indictable offense, they showed Nixon contemptuous of the United States, its institutions, and its people. According to Time magazine, the Republican Party leaders in the Western U. felt that while there remained a significant number of Nixon loyalists in the party, the majority believed that Nixon should step down as quickly as possible. They were disturbed by the bad language and the coarse, vindictive tone of the conversations in the transcripts. [70] [71] Supreme Court [ edit] The issue of access to the tapes went to the United States Supreme Court. On July 24, 1974, in United States v. Nixon, the Court ruled unanimously (8–0) that claims of executive privilege over the tapes were void. (Then-Justice William Rehnquist —who had recently been appointed to the Court by Nixon and most recently served in the Nixon Justice Department as Assistant Attorney General of the Office of Legal Counsel—recused himself from the case. ) The Court ordered the President to release the tapes to the special prosecutor. On July 30, 1974, Nixon complied with the order and released the subpoenaed tapes to the public. Release of the tapes [ edit] The tapes revealed several crucial conversations [72] that took place between the President and his counsel, John Dean, on March 21, 1973. In this conversation, Dean summarized many aspects of the Watergate case, and focused on the subsequent cover-up, describing it as a "cancer on the presidency". The burglary team was being paid hush money for their silence and Dean stated: "That's the most troublesome post-thing, because Bob [Haldeman] is involved in that; John [Ehrlichman] is involved in that; I am involved in that; Mitchell is involved in that. And that's an obstruction of justice. " Dean continued, saying that Howard Hunt was blackmailing the White House demanding money immediately. Nixon replied that the money should be paid: "... just looking at the immediate problem, don't you have to have—handle Hunt's financial situation damn soon?... you've got to keep the cap on the bottle that much, in order to have any options". [73] At the time of the initial congressional proceedings, it was not known if Nixon had known and approved of the payments to the Watergate defendants earlier than this conversation. Nixon's conversation with Haldeman on August 1, 1972, is one of several that establishes he did. Nixon said: "Well... they have to be paid. That's all there is to that. They have to be paid. " [74] During the congressional debate on impeachment, some believed that impeachment required a criminally indictable offense. Nixon's agreement to make the blackmail payments was regarded as an affirmative act to obstruct justice. [66] On December 7, 1973, investigators found that an 18 1 ⁄ 2 -minute portion of one recorded tape had been erased. Rose Mary Woods, Nixon's longtime personal secretary, said she had accidentally erased the tape by pushing the wrong pedal on her tape player when answering the phone. The press ran photos of the set-up, showing that it was unlikely for Woods to answer the phone while keeping her foot on the pedal. Later forensic analysis in 2003 determined that the tape had been erased in several segments—at least five, and perhaps as many as nine. [75] Final investigations and resignation [ edit] Nixon's position was becoming increasingly precarious. On February 6, 1974, the House of Representatives approved 803 giving the Judiciary Committee authority to investigate impeachment of the President. [76] [77] On July 27, 1974, the House Judiciary Committee voted 27-to-11 to recommend the first article of impeachment against the president: obstruction of justice. The Committee recommended the second article, abuse of power, on July 29, 1974. The next day, on July 30, 1974, the Committee recommended the third article: contempt of Congress. On August 20, 1974, the House authorized the printing of the Committee report H. Rep. 93–1305, which included the text of the resolution impeaching Nixon and set forth articles of impeachment against him. [78] [79] "Smoking Gun" tape [ edit] Nixon Oval Office meeting with H. Haldeman "Smoking Gun" Conversation June 23, 1972 Full Transcript On August 5, 1974, the White House released a previously unknown audio tape from June 23, 1972. Recorded only a few days after the break-in, it documented the initial stages of the cover-up: it revealed Nixon and Haldeman had conducted a meeting in the Oval Office where they discussed how to stop the FBI from continuing their investigation of the break-in, as they recognised that there was a high risk that their position in the scandal may be revealed. Haldeman introduced the topic as follows:... the Democratic break-in thing, we're back to the—in the, the problem area because the FBI is not under control, because Gray doesn't exactly know how to control them, and they have... their investigation is now leading into some productive areas... and it goes in some directions we don't want it to go. [80] House Judiciary Committee members and staff, 1974 After explaining how the money from CRP was traced to the burglars, Haldeman explained to Nixon the cover-up plan: "the way to handle this now is for us to have Walters [CIA] call Pat Gray [FBI] and just say, 'Stay the hell out of this... this is ah, business here we don't want you to go any further on it. '" [80] Nixon approved the plan, and after he was given more information about the involvement of his campaign in the break-in, he told Haldeman: "All right, fine, I understand it all. We won't second-guess Mitchell and the rest. " Returning to the use of the CIA to obstruct the FBI, he instructed Haldeman: "You call them in. Good. Good deal. Play it tough. That's the way they play it and that's the way we are going to play it. " [80] [81] Nixon denied that this constituted an obstruction of justice, as his instructions ultimately resulted in the CIA truthfully reporting to the FBI that there were no national security issues. Nixon urged the FBI to press forward with the investigation when they expressed concern about interference. [82] Before the release of this tape, Nixon had denied any involvement in the scandal. He claimed that there were no political motivations in his instructions to the CIA, and claimed he had no knowledge before March 21, 1973, of involvement by senior campaign officials such as John Mitchell. The contents of this tape persuaded Nixon's own lawyers, Fred Buzhardt and James St. Clair, that "the President had lied to the nation, to his closest aides, and to his own lawyers—for more than two years". [83] The tape, which Barber Conable referred to as a " smoking gun ", proved that Nixon had been involved in the cover-up from the beginning. In the week before Nixon's resignation, Ehrlichman and Haldeman tried unsuccessfully to get Nixon to grant them pardons—which he had promised them before their April 1973 resignations. [84] Resignation [ edit] Nixon's resignation letter, August 9, 1974. Pursuant to federal law, the letter was addressed to Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. When Kissinger initialed the letter at 11:35 a. m., Ford officially became president. The release of the "smoking gun" tape destroyed Nixon politically. The ten congressmen who had voted against all three articles of impeachment in the House Judiciary Committee announced they would all support the impeachment article accusing Nixon of obstructing justice when the articles came up before the full House. [86] Additionally, Rhodes, the House leader of Nixon's party, announced that he would vote to impeach, stating that "coverup of criminal activity and misuse of federal agencies can neither be condoned nor tolerated". [87] On the night of August 7, 1974, Senators Barry Goldwater and Hugh Scott and Congressman Rhodes met with Nixon in the Oval Office. Scott and Rhodes were the Republican leaders in the Senate and House, respectively; Goldwater was brought along as an elder statesman. The three lawmakers told Nixon that his support in Congress had all but disappeared. Rhodes told Nixon that he would face certain impeachment when the articles came up for vote in the full House; indeed, by one estimate, no more than 75 representatives were willing to oppose impeachment. [87] Goldwater and Scott told the president that there were enough votes in the Senate to convict him, and that no more than 15 Senators were willing to vote for acquittal. Realizing that he had no chance of staying in office and that public opinion was not in his favor, Nixon decided to resign. [88] In a nationally televised address from the Oval Office on the evening of August 8, 1974, the president said, in part: In all the decisions I have made in my public life, I have always tried to do what was best for the Nation. Throughout the long and difficult period of Watergate, I have felt it was my duty to persevere, to make every possible effort to complete the term of office to which you elected me. In the past few days, however, it has become evident to me that I no longer have a strong enough political base in the Congress to justify continuing that effort. As long as there was such a base, I felt strongly that it was necessary to see the constitutional process through to its conclusion, that to do otherwise would be unfaithful to the spirit of that deliberately difficult process and a dangerously destabilizing precedent for the future.... I would have preferred to carry through to the finish whatever the personal agony it would have involved, and my family unanimously urged me to do so. But the interest of the Nation must always come before any personal considerations. From the discussions I have had with Congressional and other leaders, I have concluded that because of the Watergate matter I might not have the support of the Congress that I would consider necessary to back the very difficult decisions and carry out the duties of this office in the way the interests of the Nation would require.... I have never been a quitter. To leave office before my term is completed is abhorrent to every instinct in my body. But as President, I must put the interest of America first. America needs a full-time President and a full-time Congress, particularly at this time with problems we face at home and abroad. To continue to fight through the months ahead for my personal vindication would almost totally absorb the time and attention of both the President and the Congress in a period when our entire focus should be on the great issues of peace abroad and prosperity without inflation at home. Therefore, I shall resign the Presidency effective at noon tomorrow. Vice President Ford will be sworn in as President at that hour in this office. [89] The morning that his resignation took effect, the President, with Mrs. Nixon and their family, said farewell to the White House staff in the East Room. [90] A helicopter carried them from the White House to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. Nixon later wrote that he thought, "As the helicopter moved on to Andrews, I found myself thinking not of the past, but of the future. What could I do now? " At Andrews, he and his family boarded Air Force One to El Toro Marine Corps Air Station in California, and then were transported to his home La Casa Pacifica in San Clemente. President Ford's pardon of Nixon [ edit] Pen used by President Gerald R. Ford to pardon Richard Nixon on September 8, 1974 With Nixon's resignation, Congress dropped its impeachment proceedings. Criminal prosecution was still a possibility at both the federal and the state level. [64] Nixon was succeeded by Vice President Gerald Ford as President, who on September 8, 1974, issued a full and unconditional pardon of Nixon, immunizing him from prosecution for any crimes he had "committed or may have committed or taken part in" as president. [91] In a televised broadcast to the nation, Ford explained that he felt the pardon was in the best interest of the country. He said that the Nixon family's situation "is an American tragedy in which we all have played a part. It could go on and on and on, or someone must write the end to it. I have concluded that only I can do that, and if I can, I must. " [92] Nixon continued to proclaim his innocence until his death in 1994. In his official response to the pardon, he said that he "was wrong in not acting more decisively and more forthrightly in dealing with Watergate, particularly when it reached the stage of judicial proceedings and grew from a political scandal into a national tragedy". [93] Some commentators have argued that pardoning Nixon contributed to President Ford's loss of the presidential election of 1976. [94] Allegations of a secret deal made with Ford, promising a pardon in return for Nixon's resignation, led Ford to testify before the House Judiciary Committee on October 17, 1974. [95] [96] In his autobiography A Time to Heal, Ford wrote about a meeting he had with Nixon's Chief of Staff, Alexander Haig. Haig was explaining what he and Nixon's staff thought were Nixon's only options. He could try to ride out the impeachment and fight against conviction in the Senate all the way, or he could resign. His options for resigning were to delay his resignation until further along in the impeachment process, to try to settle for a censure vote in Congress, or to pardon himself and then resign. Haig told Ford that some of Nixon's staff suggested that Nixon could agree to resign in return for an agreement that Ford would pardon him. Haig emphasized that these weren't his suggestions. He didn't identify the staff members and he made it very clear that he wasn't recommending any one option over another. What he wanted to know was whether or not my overall assessment of the situation agreed with his. [emphasis in original]... Next he asked if I had any suggestions as to courses of actions for the President. I didn't think it would be proper for me to make any recommendations at all, and I told him so. Aftermath [ edit] Final legal actions and effect on the law profession [ edit] Charles Colson pled guilty to charges concerning the Daniel Ellsberg case; in exchange, the indictment against him for covering up the activities of the Committee to Re-elect the President was dropped, as it was against Strachan. The remaining five members of the Watergate Seven indicted in March went on trial in October 1974. On January 1, 1975, all but Parkinson were found guilty. In 1976, the U. Court of Appeals ordered a new trial for Mardian; subsequently, all charges against him were dropped. Haldeman, Ehrlichman, and Mitchell exhausted their appeals in 1977. Ehrlichman entered prison in 1976, followed by the other two in 1977. Since Nixon and many senior officials involved in Watergate were lawyers, the scandal severely tarnished the public image of the legal profession. [98] [99] [100] The Watergate scandal resulted in 69 government officials being charged and 48 being found guilty, including: [14] John N. Mitchell, Attorney General of the United States who resigned to become Director of Committee to Re-elect the President, convicted of perjury about his involvement in the Watergate break-in. Served 19 months of a one- to four-year sentence. [23] Richard Kleindienst, Attorney General, convicted of "refusing to answer questions" (contempt of court); given one month in jail. [101] Jeb Stuart Magruder, Deputy Director of Committee to Re-elect the President, [26] pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to the burglary, and was sentenced to 10 months to four years in prison, of which he served seven months before being paroled. [102] Frederick C. LaRue, Advisor to John Mitchell, convicted of obstruction of justice. He served four and a half months. [102] H. Haldeman, Chief of Staff for Nixon, convicted of conspiracy to the burglary, obstruction of justice, and perjury. Served 18 months in prison. [103] John Ehrlichman, Counsel to Nixon, convicted of conspiracy to the burglary, obstruction of justice, and perjury. [104] Egil Krogh, aide to John Ehrlichman, sentenced to six months for his part in the Daniel Ellsberg case. [102] John W. Dean III, counsel to Nixon, convicted of obstruction of justice, later reduced to felony offenses and sentenced to time already served, which totaled four months. [102] Dwight L. Chapin, deputy assistant to Nixon, convicted of perjury. [102] Maurice Stans, United States Secretary of Commerce who resigned to become Finance Chairman of Committee to Re-elect the President, convicted of multiple counts of illegal campaigning, fined $5, 000 (in 1975 – $23, 800 today). [105] Herbert W. Kalmbach, personal attorney to Nixon, convicted of illegal campaigning. Served 191 days in prison and fined $10, 000 (in 1974 – $51, 800 today). [102] Charles W. Colson, special counsel to Nixon, convicted of obstruction of justice. Served seven months in Federal Maxwell Prison. [101] Herbert L. Porter, aide to the Committee to Re-elect the President. Convicted of perjury. [102] G. Gordon Liddy, Special Investigations Group, convicted of masterminding the burglary, original sentence of up to 20 years in prison. [102] [106] Served 4 1 ⁄ 2 years in federal prison. [107] E. Howard Hunt, security consultant, convicted of masterminding and overseeing the burglary, original sentence of up to 35 years in prison. [102] [106] Served 33 months in prison. [108] James W. McCord Jr., convicted of six charges of burglary, conspiracy and wiretapping. [102] Served two months in prison. [107] Virgilio Gonzalez, convicted of burglary, original sentence of up to 40 years in prison. [102] [106] Served 13 months in prison. [107] Bernard Barker, convicted of burglary, original sentence of up to 40 years in prison. [102] [106] Served 18 months in prison. [109] Eugenio Martínez, convicted of burglary, original sentence of up to 40 years in prison. [102] [106] Served 15 months in prison. [110] Frank Sturgis, convicted of burglary, original sentence of up to 40 years in prison. [102] [106] Served 10 months in prison. [110] To defuse public demand for direct federal regulation of lawyers (as opposed to leaving it in the hands of state bar associations or courts), the American Bar Association (ABA) launched two major reforms. First, the ABA decided that its existing Model Code of Professional Responsibility (promulgated 1969) was a failure. In 1983 it replaced it with the Model Rules of Professional Conduct. [111] The MRPC have been adopted in part or in whole by 49 states (and is being considered [ when? ] by the last one, California). Its preamble contains an emphatic reminder that the legal profession can remain self-governing only if lawyers behave properly. Second, the ABA promulgated a requirement that law students at ABA-approved law schools take a course in professional responsibility (which means they must study the MRPC). The requirement remains in effect. [112] On June 24 and 25, 1975, Nixon gave secret testimony to a grand jury. According to news reports at the time, Nixon answered questions about the 18 1 ⁄ 2 -minute tape gap, altering White House tape transcripts turned over to the House Judiciary Committee, using the Internal Revenue Service to harass political enemies, and a $100, 000 contribution from billionaire Howard Hughes. Aided by the Public Citizen Litigation Group, the historian Stanley Kutler, who has written several books about Nixon and Watergate and had successfully sued for the 1996 public release of the Nixon White House tapes, [113] sued for release of the transcripts of the Nixon grand jury testimony. [114] On July 29, 2011, U. District Judge Royce Lamberth granted Kutler's request, saying historical interests trumped privacy, especially considering that Nixon and other key figures were deceased, and most of the surviving figures had testified under oath, have been written about, or were interviewed. The transcripts were not immediately released pending the government's decision on whether to appeal. [114] They were released in their entirety on November 10, 2011, although the names of people still alive were redacted. [115] Texas A&M University–Central Texas professor Luke Nichter wrote the chief judge of the federal court in Washington to release hundreds of pages of sealed records of the Watergate Seven. In June 2012 the U. Department of Justice wrote the court that it would not object to their release with some exceptions. [116] On November 2, 2012, Watergate trial records for G. Gordon Liddy and James McCord were ordered unsealed by Federal Judge Royce Lamberth. [117] Political and cultural reverberations [ edit] According to Thomas J. Johnson, a professor of journalism at University of Texas at Austin, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger predicted during Nixon's final days that history would remember Nixon as a great president and that Watergate would be relegated to a "minor footnote". [118] When Congress investigated the scope of the president's legal powers, it belatedly found that consecutive presidential administrations had declared the United States to be in a continuous open-ended state of emergency since 1950. Congress enacted the National Emergencies Act in 1976 to regulate such declarations. The Watergate scandal left such an impression on the national and international consciousness that many scandals since then have been labeled with the suffix " -gate ". One of a variety of anti-Ford buttons generated during the 1976 presidential election: it reads "Gerald... Pardon me! " and depicts a thief cracking a safe labeled "Watergate". Disgust with the revelations about Watergate, the Republican Party, and Nixon strongly affected results of the November 1974 Senate and House elections, which took place three months after Nixon's resignation. The Democrats gained five seats in the Senate and forty-nine in the House (the newcomers were nicknamed " Watergate Babies "). Congress passed legislation that changed campaign financing, to amend the Freedom of Information Act, as well as to require financial disclosures by key government officials (via the Ethics in Government Act). Other types of disclosures, such as releasing recent income tax forms, became expected, though not legally required. Presidents since Franklin D. Roosevelt had recorded many of their conversations but the practice purportedly ended after Watergate. Ford's pardon of Nixon played a major role in his defeat in the 1976 presidential election against Jimmy Carter. [94] In 1977, Nixon arranged an interview with British journalist David Frost in the hope of improving his legacy. Based on a previous interview in 1968, [119] he believed that Frost would be an easy interviewer and was taken aback by Frost's incisive questions. The interview displayed the entire scandal to the American people, and Nixon formally apologized, but his legacy remained tarnished. [120] The 2008 movie, Frost/Nixon is a media depiction of this. In the aftermath of Watergate, " follow the money " became part of the American lexicon and is widely believed to have been uttered by Mark Felt to Woodward and Bernstein. The phrase was never used in the 1974 book All the President's Men and did not become associated with it until the movie of the same name was released in 1976. [121] The 2017 movie, Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House, is about Mark Felt's role in the Watergate scandal and his identity of being Deep Throat. The parking garage where Woodward and Felt met in Rosslyn still stands. Its significance was noted by Arlington County with a historical marker in 2011. [122] [123] In 2017 it was announced that the garage would be demolished as part of construction of an apartment building on the site; the developers announced that the site's significance would be memorialized within the new complex. [124] [125] Purpose of the break-in [ edit] Despite the enormous impact of the Watergate scandal, the purpose of the break-in of the DNC offices has never been conclusively established. Records from the United States v. Liddy trial, made public in 2013, showed that four of the five burglars testified that they were told the campaign operation hoped to find evidence that linked Cuban funding to Democratic campaigns. [126] The longtime hypothesis suggests that the target of the break-in was the offices of Larry O'Brien, the DNC Chairman. [ citation needed] [127] However, O'Brien's name was not on Alfred C. Baldwin III's list of targets that was released in 2013. [ citation needed] Among those listed were senior DNC official R. Spencer Oliver, Oliver's secretary Ida "Maxine" Wells, co-worker Robert Allen and secretary Barbara Kennedy. [126] Based on these revelations, Texas A&M history professor Luke Nichter, who had successfully petitioned for the release of the information, [128] argued that Woodward and Bernstein were incorrect in concluding, based largely on Watergate burglar James McCord's word, that the purpose of the break-in was to bug O'Brien's phone to gather political and financial intelligence on the Democrats. [ citation needed] Instead, Nichter sided with late journalist J. Anthony Lukas of the New York Times, who had concluded that the committee was seeking to find evidence linking the Democrats to prostitution, as it was alleged that Oliver's office had been used to arrange such meetings. However, Nichter acknowledged that Woodward and Bernstein's theory of O'Brien as the target could not be debunked unless information was released about what Baldwin heard in his bugging of conversations. [ citation needed] In 1968, O'Brien was appointed by Vice President Hubert Humphrey to serve as the national director of Humphrey's presidential campaign and, separately, by Howard Hughes to serve as Hughes' public-policy lobbyist in Washington. O'Brien was elected national chairman of the DNC in 1968 and 1970. In late 1971, the president's brother, Donald Nixon, was collecting intelligence for his brother at the time and asked John H. Meier, an adviser to Howard Hughes, about O'Brien. In 1956, Donald Nixon had borrowed $205, 000 from Howard Hughes and had never repaid the loan. The loan's existence surfaced during the 1960 presidential election campaign, embarrassing Richard Nixon and becoming a political liability. According to author Donald M. Bartlett, Richard Nixon would do whatever was necessary to prevent another family embarrassment. [129] From 1968 to 1970, Hughes withdrew nearly half a million dollars from the Texas National Bank of Commerce for contributions to both Democrats and Republicans, including presidential candidates Humphrey and Nixon. Hughes wanted Donald Nixon and Meier involved but Nixon opposed this. [130] Meier told Donald that he was sure the Democrats would win the election because they had considerable information on Richard Nixon's illicit dealings with Hughes that had never been released, and that it resided with Larry O'Brien. [131] According to Fred Emery, O'Brien had been a lobbyist for Hughes in a Democrat-controlled Congress, and the possibility of his finding out about Hughes' illegal contributions to the Nixon campaign was too much of a danger for Nixon to ignore. [132] James F. Neal, who prosecuted the Watergate 7, did not believe Nixon had ordered the break-in because of Nixon's surprised reaction when he was told about it. [133] Reactions [ edit] Australia [ edit] Australian Prime Minister Gough Whitlam referred to the American presidency's "parlous position" without the direct wording of the Watergate scandal during Question Time in May 1973. [134] The following day responding to a question upon "the vital importance of future United States-Australia relations, " Whitlam parried that the usage of the word 'Watergate' was not his. [135] United States-Australia relations have been considered to have figured as influential when, in November 1975, Australia experienced its own constitutional crisis which led to the dismissal of the Whitlam Government by Sir John Kerr, the Australian Governor-General. [136] Max Suich has suggested that the US was involved in ending the Whitlam government. [137] China [ edit] Chinese then-Premier Zhou Enlai said in October 1973 that the scandal did not affect the relations between China and the United States. [138] According to Thai then- Prime Minister Kukrit Pramoj of Thailand in July 1975, Chairman Mao Zedong called the Watergate scandal "the result of 'too much freedom of political expression in the U. ' " [139] Mao called it "an indication of American isolationism, which he saw as 'disastrous' for Europe". He further said, "Do Americans really want to go isolationist?... In the two world wars, the Americans came [in] very late, but all the same, they did come in. They haven't been isolationist in practice. " [140] Japan [ edit] In August 1973, then- Prime Minister Kakuei Tanaka said that the scandal had "no cancelling influence on U. leadership in the world". Tanaka further said, "The pivotal role of the United States has not changed, so this internal affair will not be permitted to have an effect. " [141] In March 1975, Tanaka's successor, Takeo Miki, said at a convention of the Liberal Democratic Party, "At the time of the Watergate issue in America, I was deeply moved by the scene in the House Judiciary Committee, where each member of the committee expressed his own or her own heart based upon the spirit of the American Constitution. It was this attitude, I think, that rescued American democracy. " [142] Singapore [ edit] Then- Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew said in August 1973, "As one surprising revelation follows another at the Senate hearings on Watergate, it becomes increasingly clear that the District of Columbia (Washington D. ), today is in no position to offer the moral or strong political and economic leadership for which its friends and allies are yearning. " [143] Moreover, Lee said that the scandal may have led the United States to lessen its interests and commitments in world affairs, to weaken its ability to enforce the Paris Peace Accords on Vietnam, and to not react to violations of the Accords. Lee said further that the United States "makes the future of this peace in Indonesia an extremely bleak one with grave consequence for the contiguous states". Lee then blamed the scandal for economic inflation in Singapore because the Singapore dollar was pegged to the United States dollar at the time, assuming the U. dollar was stronger than the British pound sterling. [144] Soviet Union [ edit] In June 1973, when Chairman Leonid Brezhnev arrived in the United States to have a one-week meeting with Nixon, [145] Brezhnev told the press, "I do not intend to refer to that matter—[the Watergate]. It would be completely indecent for me to refer to it... My attitude toward Mr. Nixon is of very great respect. " When one reporter suggested that Nixon and his position with Brezhnev were "weakened" by the scandal, Brezhnev replied, "It does not enter my mind to think whether Mr. Nixon has lost or gained any influence because of the affair. " Then he said further that he had respected Nixon because of Nixon's "realistic and constructive approach to Soviet Union–United States relations... passing from an era of confrontation to an era of negotiations between nations". [146] United Kingdom [ edit] Talks between Nixon and Prime Minister Edward Heath may have been bugged. Heath did not publicly display his anger, with aides saying that he was unconcerned about having been bugged at the White House. According to officials, Heath commonly had notes taken of his public discussions with Nixon so a recording would not have bothered him. However, officials privately said that if private talks with Nixon were bugged, then Heath would be outraged. Even so, Heath was privately outraged over being taped without his prior knowledge. [147] Other international reactions [ edit] Iranian then-Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi told the press in 1973, "I want to say quite emphatically... that everything that would weaken or jeopardize the President's power to make decisions in split seconds would represent grave danger for the whole world. " [141] An unnamed Kenyan senior official of Foreign Affairs Ministry accused Nixon of lacking interest in Africa and its politics and then said, "American President is so enmeshed in domestic problems created by Watergate that foreign policy seems suddenly to have taken a back seat [ sic]. " [141] Cuban then-leader Fidel Castro said in his December 1974 interview that, of the crimes committed by the Cuban exiles, like killings, attacks on Cuban ports, and spying, the Watergate burglaries and wiretappings were "probably the least of [them]". [148] Domestic reactions [ edit] After the fall of Saigon ended the Vietnam War, Secretary of State Henry Kissinger said in May 1975 that, if the scandal had not caused Nixon to resign, and Congress had not overridden Nixon's veto of the War Powers Resolution, North Vietnam would not have captured South Vietnam. [149] Kissinger told the National Press Club in January 1977 that Nixon's presidential powers weakened during his tenure, (rephrased by the media) "prevent[ing] the United States from exploiting the [scandal]". [150] The publisher of The Sacramento Union, John P. McGoff, said in January 1975 that the media overemphasized the scandal, though he called it "an important issue", overshadowing more serious topics, like a declining economy and an energy crisis. Skandal nouvelle generation.
The make-up person is hitting.
She think she is so great and she is making money of this.
The great John Lithgow.
Margot is the most beautiful women Ive ever seen in my life.

Nice looking boy. This movie should be about Gretchen Carlson, not Megan Kelly. Probably bringing back bad memories. Emily blunt acting in Sicario is great so a collab of her and rock will cause movie to be great. Skandal tekst.

Writed by - Stephen King, Diane Johnson
Haunted by a persistent writer's block, the aspiring author and recovering alcoholic, Jack Torrance, drags his wife, Wendy, and his gifted son, Danny, up snow-capped Colorado's secluded Overlook Hotel after taking up a job as an off-season caretaker. As the cavernous hotel shuts down for the season, the manager gives Jack a grand tour, and the facility's chef, the ageing Mr Hallorann, has a fascinating chat with Danny about a rare psychic gift called "The Shining", making sure to warn him about the hotel's abandoned rooms, and, in particular, the off-limits Room 237. However, instead of overcoming the dismal creative rut, little by little, Jack starts losing his mind, trapped in an unforgiving environment of seemingly endless snowstorms, and a gargantuan silent prison riddled with strange occurrences and eerie visions. Now, the incessant voices inside Jack's head demand sacrifice. Is Jack capable of murder?

Director - Stanley Kubrick

Mortal Konbat Vs D.C Universe. The shining > doctor sleep. The girl should have slashed jacks face when he said heres jonny. Anyone got a youtube account i can use. Saw is a game. 0:40 COMPLETELY AGREE WITH THIS TOO many horror movies nowadays use jump scares and it's boring. That's why I love The Shining because it doesn't use any, but uses it's own natural way of scaring people.

I watch The Shining, every year during a snowstorm

Its almost as if Lloyd is testing him to see if he can be trusted as the caretaker. Not one single blink in Lloyds eyes. Opera prima de Kubrick, para mí la mejor, sólo escuchar éste intro, un escalofrío invade tú cuerpo. Magistral! 🔝.

@ 2:50 looks like you got a spot on yourself *pats on back… XD. This is a great film, but the opening credits are a bit lazy. The music is AWESOME. No one can replace jack, lol. his facial expressions say a lot, especially in this and as good as it gets. Alternate tittle: Here's Trevor. Jig the Saw. In the book the bear was called Dogman and one of my friends thought it was Stephen King's fursona lol. Came back after the trailer of Doctor Sleep. Anybody else excited for the movie? REDRUM. Her: tries to hide Also her: aaaahhhhhh. Not all the guests are moving. Many are frozen in place, like a photograph. I'm whaching saw 5 right now. I like the title of the movie. Every single second of this entire movie was scary. The Shining no registration Watch Online Streamin. The Shining Why.

I know this is a fictional story but if it's real, just like in the movies, you cannot kill Freddy Kruger. It is just impossible. All you can do is hurt him that's it. Nothing will ever top the original but Doctor Sleep was a good sequel.

You've always been the caretaker Mr Torrance

A lot of people make fun of Jack's performance in this film, but in this scene he is truly frightening and it's one the most believable portraits of insanity I've ever seen. This is a really good movie :D.

This is like plus one. Beautiful and sensitive actress like her sure invites a lot of attention and affections from men particularly from show business, apart from the FBI. RIP Jean Seberg.

These people are way weird. My fantasy is to become a successful happy billionaire 😂. Free stream seberg film. Yet another all mighty flop by Kirsten Stewart, she was completely wrong for the part and spends the entire film making stupid faces and putting in a one dimensional performance... how many times is Hollywood going to cast her in a film way beyond her ability, even Charlie's angels was utter rubbish and that's about her level. Get a proper actress for a film like this...

Oh great, an entire movie about a phenomenon that gets misinterpreted by idiots. “How are you not dead? ” “I hAvE nO iDeA!”. Its propaganda. Wtf is wrong with America.

Being Polish myself I am not confused about the a ( ski ending is for male surnames and -ska is for female surnames, although many women change it after moving abroad to avoid misunderstandings as it seems like they have different surnames than their husbands) but it definitely should be Balińska and not Balinska.

It is sometimes hard to pinpoint where exactly films fail, the cinematography wasn't bad and you can definitely see that Kristen Stewart tried, but everything else about this film was below mediocre. Characters were one dimensional and lacked any depth, plot development, from the very moment the two main characters meet and then meet again, was abrupt and unbelievable. The other main characters - the good FBI agent vs. the bad one, were just as shallow. Not to mention the wives, whose role never went anywhere and might have as well not been in this film at all.

Me after hearing the opening line: “Do we, do we really all dream of a knight in shining armor?”. This looks amazing! Clever premise. Definitely gonna see it. As a viewer who is very familiar with the work of Jean Seberg I simply can't accept Kristen in that role. She simply doesn't measure up to the character she is trying to play. She probably did well in the Twilight movies because she really has "dead eyes. Seberg was vibrant and alive in all of her roles, a talent Kristen has yet to develop. The dance scene gets me every time! 😂.

The film is directed by Disney veteran Lino DiSalvo, in his directorial debut, written by Blaise Hemingway, Greg Erb and Jason Oremland, and produced by On Animation Studios. The film stars the voices of Anya Taylor-Joy, Jim Gaffigan, Gabriel Bateman, Adam Lambert, Kenan Thompson, Meghan Trainor and Daniel Radcliffe. The film follows a girl named Marla who tries to save her brother from a Playmobil world the two are sucked into, and becomes involved in the midst of a population-capturing scheme by Emperor Maximus. Premiering as the opener of the June 2019 Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Playmobil: The Movie began theatrical runs in France on 7 August 2019 by Pathé, in the United Kingdom on 9 August 2019 by StudioCanal, and in the United States on 6 December 2019 by STXfilms. Playmobil: The Movie was panned by critics for being a perceived feature-length advertisement; most criticism was of the poor storytelling, generic songs, and worldbuilding problems, with several negative comparisons to The Lego Movie. It was also a box-office bomb, grossing $15 million on a $40 million budget, and in the United States had the worst opening weekend ever for a film playing in over 2, 300 theaters. [6] Plot [ edit] Marla is a formerly free-spirited girl who has grown up to be responsible yet overprotective in order to care for her brother Charlie, who has grown lonely and disconnected from her after the death of their parents. One night, Charlie sneaks out to visit a toy museum with a Playmobil exhibit. After Marla arrives and scolds Charlie for running away, a lighthouse illuminates them and transports them to the Playmobil world. Marla and Charlie find themselves in the middle of a Viking battle, and Charlie helps them until he is kidnapped by some pirates. Frantic to find her brother, Marla goes to the nearest town hoping to ask for help, and runs into Del, the driver of a food truck whose client refuses to pay him over pink hay that causes the town's horses to sprout wings. As Marla tries to form a posse to find Charlie, Del gets her out of trouble when she shows Viking gold to the whole town, and agrees to help Marla find her brother in exchange for the gold. Marla and Del run into Rex Dasher, a secret agent and an old friend of Del. Rex explains that a number of characters have disappeared, and the group sneaks into a villainous spy headquarters to find information about the disappearances. Despite some issues, they successfully gather the data and escape, but Rex is later captured by the pirates. He is taken away to Constantinopolis and finds Charlie, who had been locked up with other characters by Emperor Maximus, who intends to have the prisoners fight to their deaths. Rex tells Charlie that Marla had been looking for him, which encourages Charlie to break away. However, he later allows himself to be recaptured so the other characters could escape. Del recognizes that a device used by the pirates belongs to Glinara, an alien crime lord. After meeting with her in exchange for information, Del offers to pay twice as much as he owes her. Glinara agrees and reveals that she sold the device to Maximus. However, Del is unable to uphold his end of the bargain, as Marla only had two pieces of gold left. Angered, Glinara captures them and attempts to drop them into a portal, but they are spared by Glinara's robot servant Robotitron, who hacks the portal and drops the group into a forest. Del leaves the group, upset by Marla's deception. Marla and Robotitron get lost in the forest until Marla accidentally hits a fairy godmother, who encourages her to continue her search and sends her to Constantinopolis. Arriving at the city, Marla reaches a coliseum where Charlie is about to fight a Tyrannosaurus rex. Charlie and Marla work together to fight off the T-Rex, but to no avail. Del soon arrives with his food truck, and Marla uses the last of Del's pink hay to turn the T-Rex harmless. An enraged Maximus orders his guards to arrest them, but the guards reveal themselves to be Rex and the missing warriors, who then lock Maximus inside a cage. As everyone celebrates their victory, Marla and Charlie use the T-Rex to fly back to the lighthouse and return to the real world, where it is revealed that they were missing for only five minutes. On good terms, Marla promises to Charlie that their relationship will be mended. In a mid-credit scene, one of the security guards finds a figure of Maximus on the floor next to a cage. As he places him on top of Mount Olympus, Maximus's laugh is heard. Cast [ edit] Anya Taylor-Joy as Marla Brenner. Charlie's sister, who also voices Marla's Playmobil form. Lino DiSalvo cast Taylor-Joy for the "texture" of her voice, and described her performance as "believable and emotional. " [7] Gabriel Bateman as Charlie Brenner. Marla's brother, who also voices Charlie's Playmobil form. As DiSalvo explains, "when I met Gabriel, I totally saw a kid that Spielberg would cast. " [8] Ryan S. Hill plays a 6-year-old Charlie. Jim Gaffigan as Del. A food truck driver who supports himself with several side jobs and is Marla's best friend. Daniel Radcliffe as Rex Dasher. A secret agent who helps Marla. While normally reluctant to play spy roles in films, Radcliffe accepted the part of Dasher because "there is something incredibly fun about playing an unbelievably confident, kind of to the point of being an oblivious, person who is constantly undercut by other characters who make him realise that maybe he's not as smooth as he thinks he. " [9] As he explained on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, "Rex Dasher is a Playmobil version of James Bond. There's a ridiculous thing that will sound suitably ridiculous to your listeners, because they know that it would be ridiculous for me to play James Bond in real life. But because I have an English accent I go to America, a lot of people think and say something to the effect of, 'You should be James Bond. ' And I say, 'No, you're wrong. ' So the chance to play Playmobil James Bond was like, 'That seems a little more my speed. '" [10] On an April 2019 airing of The Graham Norton Show, Radcliffe displayed a figure of Dasher that was sent to him by the director. [11] Adam Lambert as Emperor Maximus. The tyrannical ruler of Constatinopolis. Heavily playing with Playmobil figures as a kid, Lambert stated that enjoyed playing the part: "He's an obnoxious, ridiculous, comical bad guy. [... ] He's got like Napoleon complex, he's incredibly narcissistic. He loves the sound of his own voice. He's spoiled. He's a brat. And he usually gets his way. " [12] He explained that he played the character as himself "on a really bad day, " and said performing the musical number was his favorite part of working on Playmobil. [13] Kenan Thompson as Bloodbones A pirate captain. In addition to the role's Broadway-level singing demands, the nasal-y-voiced Thompson also had to perform his lines in a guttural tone, which gave him a "headache. " [14] Meghan Trainor as The Fairy Godmother. An unnamed fairy godmother who Marla encounters in a forest. It was Trainor's childhood dream to play a fairy character, but also a very difficult task: "I’ve never smiled so hard in my life to make this girl happy and I was jumping up and down. " [15] Trainor's involvement in Playmobil: The Movie began while writing "Run Like The River" for her album Treat Myself. "I remember meeting someone who was like, this should be in the movie, " explained Trainor; and a week later, she presented the song to DiSalvo: "It looked like it blew his mind. " [15] Lino DiSalvo as Robotitron. A robot employed by Glinara. Maddie Taylor as Glinara. An alien crime lord. Kirk Thornton as Ook Ook Dan Navarro as Viking Leader Paloma Michelle as Valera, an Amazon warrior. [16] Spike Spencer [17] Production [ edit] Development [ edit] An animated feature film based on Playmobil figurines, produced by On Entertainment, Wild Bunch and Pathé, was announced in November 2014 and originally expected to be released at the end of 2017. [18] The film originally involved Bob Persichetti as director and screenwriter. The film would be the first in a trilogy of theatrical animated films based on Playmobil. Persichetti initially pitched the film to Sony Pictures Animation. Although Sony tried to buy the pitch, it fell through. He was eventually offered instead to direct the 2018 superhero film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. [19] The film was animated in On Animation's Canadian facilities. The film was also originally supposed to be distributed by Cross Creek Pictures. [20] ON Animation's producers acquired the rights for the film circa January 2016. [21] On 9 February 2016, Lino DiSalvo came on board to direct the $75 million budgeted film, replacing Persichetti. Dimitri Rassam and Aton Soumache of On Animation Studios produced the film. [22] [23] On 12 May 2016, Open Road Films acquired the US rights to the film, whose screenplay was written by Blaise Hemingway. It marks DiSalvo's directorial debut after spending 17 years at Walt Disney Animation Studios. Alexis Vonarb, Axel Von Maydell, and Moritz Borman also produced the film. [24] Maydell was first associated with the Playmobil brand fifteen years before the film's release, when he was involved in producing interactive games for the company. [25] Heitor Pereira 's involvement was announced on 21 June 2017. [26] On 17 November 2017, it was reported that Wendi McLendon-Covey would star in the film. [27] In June 2018, the film's production was underway and some details of the film were revealed, during a session at Annecy International Animated Film Festival. [28] In October 2018, lead voice cast was announced which included Anya Taylor-Joy, Gabriel Bateman, Daniel Radcliffe, Jim Gaffigan, Meghan Trainor, and Adam Lambert, while Trainor and Lambert would also write and sing original songs for the film. [29] Writing [ edit] DiSalvo instantly got to work on animatics following Open Road's acquisition, completing five animatics in Los Angeles in Montreal before work on the assets began. [21] The first 15 months of the film's production was spent in Los Angeles, with a crew of ten people. When the project moved to Montreal, 300 people ("more than half of the animation crew at a typical Disney movie") were involved. [21] Both DiSalvo and Hemingway, long-time friends, re-watched their favorite 1980s films like E. T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982) in writing Playmobil; Hemingway explained that both the movie and the old-school films they referenced knew "how to find what is magical in the most mundane situations. " [30] The producers wanted to capture a child's emotion of playing with toys with Playmobil, [25] which meant DiSolvo had to research. He interviewed more than 200 fans of Playmobil from across the globe, [31] finding that the toy series was mostly enjoyed for its role play element, where "they don’t tell you who the hero is — the player defines who the hero is. " [21] Thus, he went for a role-playing vibe in writing the film's story. [21] DiSalvo also revisited his childhood home to look at the toys he played with as a kid. [32] The German Playmobil company also sent every Playmobil set ever released to the Los Angeles development location, and the writers used them to conceive characters. A food truck and a figure wearing a Hawaiian shirt, for instance, led to the creation of Del. [31] Initially, the writers planned Playmobil: The Movie to start with either a shot of an opening storybook or a narration, similar to most fairy tale movies. These ideas were rejected due to not being "organic" enough for the overall product. [21] They finally chose to have opening and closing live-action sequences: "Marla, has lost touch with the child’s point of view that she used to have. It felt right to show her in a live-action world where there is no magic. When she finds herself in a very magical situation — which is the entrance to the world of Playmobil, it becomes the catalyst for the whole movie. " [21] Animation [ edit] Playmobil: The Movie was animated with Autodesk Maya. [33] Julien Bocabeille supervised the film's animation team that consisted of 56 animators. [34] Being that Playmobil: the Movie was a story about wish fulfillment, the scale was one of the biggest priorities. According to production designer Rémi Salmon: "We see those toys from a kid's eyes, not what he has in front of him but what he imagines. The pirate in his hand has a stiff plastic cape, but when he plays, he sees the cape floating in the wind. " [21] The animators' biggest challenges came in the set designs and character animation. [34] While each Playmobil universe varied in tone and lighting due to their differing styles, they had to have some consistences with the Playmobil world. [34] The Fifth Element and the works of J. J. Abrams were influences in designing the city of Glinara. [35] Having "a touch of richness and life" in the film's Playmobil world depended on not just the lighting being "pushed pretty far in a very cinematographic way;" but also the characters, particularly their movements and textures. [21] While not entirely animated like humans and having plastic hair and skin, the toys were given "a 20 percent freedom to bend and stretch" and wrote actually cloth-made attire for close-up shots. [21] The animators had to work with limits that came with moving the Playmobil figures, especially when it came to animating faces. The faces are 2D shapes imposed onto 3D heads, meaning that big parts of how human faces are expressed (cheekbones, nose and jaws) are not present. [34] Coming up with a convenient workflow for animating 2D faces on 3D objects was another challenge, which Jeremy Ringard and Claude Levastre was responsible for. They first came up with the idea of modeling and rigging the features as 3D shapes, but this lead to problems of Z-fighting, intersection and "floating" appearances in close-up shots. [36] They then thought of a "texture flipbook" where the animators chose from a set of facial features in order to keep the look of the movie consistent; however, they figured that it would disallow any variations to the expressions and be very expensive due to the amount of storage, texture resolution and file management involved. [33] Finally, they came up with a system where the animators used 3D-rig-controlled 2D shapes that were converted as a dynamic texture applied on the 3D head in the viewport, and the animation would be rendered real-time through a shader free of resolution or sampling restrictions. [33] The car Dasher drives is a Porsche Mission E, the 2015 concept version of the Porsche Taycan; Playmobil is the Porsche's first appearance in a major film, and a remote-controlled Mission E toy was released as a movie tie-in. [37] Themes and style [ edit] Today, we have so many cynical movies and TV shows out there, but I wanted to make a movie about a family coming together. Hopefully, parents and their kids will feel the same way about the movie, and appreciate the truthfulness of Playmobil as we tried to explore the wonderful truth that’s in these toys. —  DiSalvo on the purpose of Playmobil: The Movie. [21] Many of us have seen James Bond 's films, Clint Eastwood 's spaghetti westerns, and cloak and sword films as children. When we started to talk about moving from one genre to another, we ended up like kids playing with their Playmobil in the living room! —  Playmobil producer Tito Ortiz [38] According to DiSolvo, the moral of Playmobil: The Movie is, "The only rules that matter are the ones you set. " [39] As Nick Hasted of The Arts Desk categorized Playmobil, "it’s a breezy B-movie in a genre aspiring to Mad comic satire and grand opera;" with a "unpretentious good nature" a la 1980s and 1990s after-school specials. [40] Due to Playmobil being set in a world filled with different universes, the film caricaturizes and plays with the tropes of several genres, including western films, fantasy, science fiction, and musicals. [32] In acknowledging inevitable comparisons to The Lego Movie, DiSalvo claimed, "The movie Lego relied a lot on comedy and wasn't so much driven by characters, while our film will follow more the Disney tradition of storytelling and is meant to appeal to girls as much as boys. " [28] According to Tito Ortiz, Playmobil is about the importance of forgiveness, tolerance, and unity in broken families. [38] DiSalvo also described Playmobil: The Movie as similar to the Tom Hanks film Big (1988), in that the main character has to think like a child to achieve her goal. [31] Its premise of two siblings being sucked into a fantastical setting also garnered comparisons by journalists to The Pagemaster (1994), [41] the Jumanji films, [41] and Pleasantville (1998); [42] while the use of a live-action opening and a brother-and-sister relationship was also in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (2019). [41] [43] Some reviewers noted the shedding of gender roles in Playmobil, including Hasted: "When DiSalvo detours to Playmobil’s girl-focused range with the arrival of Meghan Trainor’s tattooed fairy godmother and pink flying horses, Marla’s brisk bravery muddles gender stereotypes with similar irreverence. " [40] Caroline Siede honored the film's "Be anything you want to be" message for allowing Marla to be any type of character regardless of her gender, [41] and Charlotte O'Sullivan of the Evening Standard called her a better Susan Pevensie: "Though interested in lipstick, and keen on being grown-up, she is never dismissed as silly or vain. " [44] One NBC News review noted Dasher's "pointed jabs about sexist archetypes. " [45] Soundtrack [ edit] "Run Like The River" was released as a single on 26 July 2019, and the film's soundtrack album 2 August 2019. [46] Release and promotion [ edit] Playmobil: The Movie premiered as the opener of the 2019 Annecy festival, which ran from 10–15 June 2019. [47] As reported by Cartoon Brew, it "was widely criticized by festival attendees and caused large numbers of the audience to leave in the middle of the film. " [48] On 17 June, CineEurope presented a trailer and a clip of Playmobil. [49] Playmobil: The Movie had its first trailer released on 16 December 2018, with a release date set for 16 August 2019. [42] The second trailer was unleashed on 23 July 2019, the release date changed to 22 November. [50] [51] Each trailer present a different premise: the first presented the film as focusing on Marla trying to save his brother in a Playmobil. [42] while the second revealed the live-action segments and depicted it as being about Rex Dasher saving the Playmobil population from a secret organization. [52] Ben Pearson of /Film noted that the marketing strategy "trie[d] to shield its actual plot. " [52] He also called the film's animation promising: "While the characters are clearly simplified to match the Playmobil toys that inspired them, the animation looks pretty slick and there's some interesting lighting going on in a few of the shots on display here. " [52] Chris Evangelista of /Film wrote upon the first trailer's release, "It's pretty clear that Playmobil: The Movie is skewing to a young audience [... ] And while this may seem like a cynical cash-grab, many people felt the same way before the first LEGO Movie came out, until the final results proved to be surprisingly enjoyable. Maybe Playmobil will manage to do the same. " [42] CNET, also responding to the trailer, opined that "It looks fun and hopefully will boast the same universal appeal as the Lego Movie. " [53] Commenting on the second trailer, Screen Rant writer Mike Jones felt the humor had its "own charm and feel" despite being comparable to The Lego Movie: "there does appear to be a decent amount of fun, laughs and adventure on display. " [50] However, he also questioned the scheduling of "such a small scale" production being scheduled in a season having to compete with Jumanji: The Next Level and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. [50] Collider 's coverage of the second trailer was ecstatic, noting its "fun" factor and opining it had the same meta humor style as The Lego Movie. [54] Sarah El-Mahmoud of Cinema Blend summarized, "the trailer showcases tons of fun action sequences with fast car chases, dinosaurs, and scared squirrels. ] One has to wonder if a connection to human kids will also be present in this movie as The LEGO Movie and Toy Story do. " However, with the awareness that the film was trying to capitalize on the fame of The Lego Movie, she also had skepticism toward its success due to the weak box office of The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part. [55] A PopSugar journalist claimed, "damn, it looks good, " also showing enthusiasm for Radcliffe's appearance. [56] According to Geekspin, "a few people already have a hunch that the Playmobil movie will flop at the box office, " due to the superior popularity of Legos over Playmobil, and the film's lack of intellectual properties, and star power. [57] Playmobil: The Movie was released in France by Pathé on 7 August 2019, on 610 screens, and was released in the USA by STX Entertainment on 6 December 2019. It was originally scheduled to be released in the United States by Open Road Films on 18 January 2019, [24] which was later delayed to 19 April 2019, [58] Due to the bankruptcy of Global Road, STX bought the U. S. distribution rights to the film in early April 2019, [59] and set the U. release date to 30 August 2019. On 5 August 2019, STX pushed the U. release date back once more to 6 December 2019, among other schedule changes of other films from STX that reportedly happened due to STX having limited cash flow, and wanting to pull their resources in to support Hustlers, although STX has denied that this was the case. [60] Upon its release in the United States on 6 December, STX reportedly encouraged theaters to offer tickets to all showings of the film for just $5 USD, a significantly lower cost than most American movie tickets. [61] The film news site Moviehole also gave away ten family passes of Playmobil. [62] In other territories, Playmobil was released to theaters in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Switzerland on 7 August 2019; [63] [64] [65] Bolivia and Israel on 8 August 2019; [66] [67] the United Kingdom on 9 August 2019, [68] Mexico and South Africa on 16 August 2019; [69] [70] Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, and Slovakia on 22 August 2019; [71] [72] [73] [74] [75] Germany, Singapore, and Thailand on 29 August 2019; [76] [77] [78] Poland on 23 August 2019; [79] Austria, Indonesia, Spain, and Venezuela on 30 August 2019; [80] [81] [82] [83] Egypt and the Philippines on 4 September 2019; [84] [85] Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, the Dominican Republic, and the United Arab Emirates on 5 September 2019; [86] [87] [88] [89] [90] [91] [92] [93] South Korea on 11 September 2019; [94] Czech Republic, Malaysia, Paraguay, and Uruguay on 12 September 2019; [95] [96] [97] [98] Iceland on 13 September 2019; [99] Bulgaria and Sweden on 20 September 2019; [100] [101] Hungary on 26 September 2019; [102] Finland and Romania on 27 September 2019; [103] [104] Portugal on 3 October 2019; [105] Ecuador on 4 October 2019; [106] Argentina on 10 October 2019; [107] Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia on 25 October 2019; [108] [109] [110] Colombia on 7 November 2019; [111] and Australia on 12 December 2019. [112] In Australia, Seven Network 's show Sunrise promoted it with a giveaway where two winners received a Playmobil Prize Pack for both tickets to the film and toy sets. [112] The Sunday Times ran a contest where five people could enter to win tickets, with one of them winning an Instax mini-camera in addition. [113] On 4 February 2020, Playmobil: The Movie VR Adventures, a virtual reality video game, will be released on Steam. [114] Reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] Playmobil: The Movie has grossed $1. 1 million in the United States and Canada, and $14. 3 million in other territories, for a worldwide total of $15. 4 million. [4] [5] In France, Playmobil opened to 604 theaters before performing at a maximum of 683 in its third week; it opened at number five with an opening weekend ground of $963, 910, and by the end of its seven-week run, it grossed a total of $2, 627, 246. [115] In the United States, Playmobil: The Movie opened in 2, 300 theaters; [116] industry experts predicted the film would have a three-day opening gross of around $905, 000 [117] and would likely become a box office bomb. [118] Preview screenings on 4 December and 5 December were very low, 4 December totaling around $40, 000 and 5 December $230, 000. [3] As The A. V. Club summarized, "STX is dropping it into U. theaters the weekend after Thanksgiving without press screenings, giving it the authentic discount-bin appearance of a toy store going out of business. " [119] [120] The US marketing budget was limited to roughly $3 million, [121] RelishMix reporting a lack of social promotion of any of its stars except for one tweet from Trainor. [3] STX set the marketing money this low due to the film's poor international box office. [122] Boxoffice Pro analyzed the film "would open just two weeks after Frozen II, one week before Jumanji: The Next Level, two weeks before Star Wars: The Rise of the Skywalker, and less than three weeks before Spies in Disguise — all of which are shoe-ins to attract young audiences and dwarf potential interest in PLAYMOBIL. " [123] According to STX president Kevin Grayson, "This is a 52-week-a -year business and we were looking for an opportunity to utilize the early December play date. " [122] According to Deadline Hollywood, Playmobil was released only weeks after Frozen II and used a variable pricing strategy where STX and many theater chains offered $5 tickets. [3] Originally projected to gross $600, 000–$800, 000 on its opening day, Playmobil grossed just $167, 000, making it the third-worst opening day of all time for a 2, 000-plus theatre production, behind Delgo (2008) and The Oogieloves in the Big Balloon Adventure (2012); [121] fourth if counting the 2014 re-release of Saw (2004) and 24th if also including films with between 1, 000-1, 999 theaters. [124] [125] It went on to gross $660, 000 in its opening weekend (an average of $287 per-venue), the fourth-worst of all-time. [3] Shortly after the weekend, Grayson responded that STX would use variable pricing in their future projects: "we have already learned from this experiment. And we will continue to learn more and will tweak it for the future so it can be the benefit to the industry that we know it can be. " [122] While the film's several worldwide distributors recouped TV sale money, they also financed it via pre-sales and thus face losses. [122] Rebecca Rubin, a Variety writer, attributed the low box office to the Playmobil brand being far less popular than Lego. [122] Critical response [ edit] On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 16% based on 59 reviews, with an average rating of 3. 72/10. The site's critical consensus reads: "Much like the toys it advertises, Playmobil: The Movie seems sadly destined to be regarded as a superficially similar yet less desirable alternative to the competition. " [126] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 25 out of 100, based on 13 critics, indicating "generally unfavorable reviews". [127] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale, while those at PostTrak gave it an average 1. 5 out of 5 stars, with 36% saying they would definitely recommend it to a friend. [3] In the PostTrak grade, adult audiences made up 31% of poll, children under 12 69%; the adult gave the film an average two-and-a-half stars, the kids under 12 around 3. 5 to four stars. [3] The New Zealand online publication Stuff named it "a strong contender for the worst film of 2019. " [128] Reviewers primarily criticized Playmobil: The Movie for being more of an advertisement than a compelling story that practiced its moral about being bold and adventurous. [129] [130] [131] [132] [133] [134] In a Rotten Tomatoes editorial, the site said critics generally called it "a regrettably mediocre outing that offers little aside from a barrage of colorful images and a brisk but ultimately generic and uninspired story. " [135] As, calling it "the worst animation of the year so far, " put it, "the story is boring, the characters are utterly unlikeable, and [... ] one is increasingly struck by the lack of anything new or interesting in the film whatsoever. Its lack of imagination or creativity is painful. " [136] A couple of reviews viewed it as part of a major problem of poorly-done toy films from Hollywood. [45] [131] Several reviews made negative comparisons to The Lego Movie, [132] [137] [133] [134] [138] such as a Variety review by Day Lodge that summarized Playmobil: The Movie as The Lego Movie "but without that blockbuster's dizzy, self-aware wit and visual invention. " [130] Nell Minow wrote that "it does not even work as a commercial, never showing us why these toys could be especially fun to play with, " and called the settings and toys "bland and generic. " [139] Some critics found it way too safe for a film about imagination, [133] [43] including Katherine McLaughlin of The List: "The references are simply too familiar to excite, as it coasts along on nostalgia and a well-worn formula. " [43] According to The Observer, " Playmobil shamelessly steals ideas. This eyesore of a cash-in lifts plot elements from Thor and Jumanji, then thinly threads them together with a few songs and shrill mantra about the need for adventure. " [140] Multiple errors in worldbuilding were spotted by critics, [141] such as its odd mixture of replications of historical and fictional settings; [142] and the overly-realistic textures [142] and movements of the Playmobil figures. [143] [139] As Minow explained, "After a whole scene establishing the limited mobility of the Playmobil characters, they suddenly switch to being able to have human-like joints and range of motion. " [139] Clariss Loughrey asked, "Shouldn’t everything be plastic? Then why do the horses have fur? " [142] Yolanda Machado noted, "Marla can’t figure out how to walk without the use of knees and yet, a minute later, she’s running. " [141] Maryann Johanson noticed even more issues with the figure movements: "A big joke is made out of how Marla, in her Playmobil body, can't walk because she has no knees... and then knees inexplicably appear and she can walk fine. Everyone has elbows, too, which the toy figures also don't have. And everyone is stuck with those clamshell hands, yet are still able to manipulate chopsticks. " [144] As Paul Whitington felt, "the themed kingdoms they visit only seem to have been chosen because Playmobil do toys based on these scenarios: sometimes, as in the wild west sequence, they are passed through virtually without comment. " [145] The live-action sequences also garnered some derision; [134] one reviewer opined it felt "like something out of an ‘80s movie, " [45] while another panned the sequence's stiff direction. [40] Salt Lake City Weekly called all of the film's concepts "all pointlessly random and head-smackingly dumb, even when it sounds on paper like it might be funny. " [146] According to Machado, Playmobil: The Movie suffered from storytelling "whiplash, " using the "mishmash of odd characters" and the sudden death of the main characters' parents as examples. [141] The A. Club criticised the choppy plot and erratic pace, reasoning it made Playmobil: The Movie "poorly conceived at every story turn, unable to even stick to a particular generic message to make up for its extremely basic humor. " [147] The film's hurried speed also came up in a Radio Times review that stated it "never stops long enough to make its story memorable. " [148] Lodge wrote the film had so little amusement it was absent of sight gags, [130] while Minow bashed the inclusion of parental death as too dark for a kid's film. [139] An RTÉ review called its emotional moments "heavy-handed and forced, " and criticized the parents' death as "solely a plot device for the sake of plot device. " [149] The songs were also called forgettable, generic, and "terrible" by several journalists; [139] [134] [130] [41] [136] one wrote that they "have remarkably little melodic staying power, " [130] and another analyzed, "there’s no chorus and the characters simply just say things to a tune. " [142] However, some reviewers did highlight Taylor-Joy's singing on the opening number. [142] [41] Playmobil: The Movie wasn't without supporting reviewers. Siede was appreciative towards the "low-key, non-judgmental" writing of the film, praising it for being more "heartfelt and earnest" than other "crass and cheap" offerings usual for children's flicks. [41] O'Sullivan summarized, "for a movie so clearly doubling as product placement, it’s also fun, a cartoon (bookended by live-action sequences) which allows talented actors to riff on unexpected themes. " She called the characters of Del and Rex "properly funny. " [44] Most admirations came towards the characters and performances, especially Radcliffe's voice-acting, [142] [40] [43] the campy villain Emperor Maximus, [45] [150] [142] [40] and Taylor-Joy's acting. [43] [40] Hasted opined, "Taylor-Joy’s tendency towards introverted, perhaps dangerous outsiders [... ] finds little outlet in mostly mild Marla, but still makes her harassed heroine warmly sympathetic. The pirate bay playmobil elokuva.
This film was good! My 4 year old loved it all the way through.

Marla and Charlie travel from the real world on an adventure to the Playmobil universe where they re-enact their favourite toys.
Very children-focussed with only a few laughs for grown-ups and those gags that do work tend to get over-played. The story is OK but Charlie and Marla both spend too long being lost and needy. The voicing and animation is good. The design of the Playmobil realm was nicely done but the portal into it was unimaginative.
I liked, Rex Dasher. This film tells the adventure of two youngsters in Playmobil land.
The animation is good, and the story actually is quite fun. There are lots of fantasy themed lands, and they are visually appealing. I think it is a good adventure for young children. It is a pity that it will be in the shadow of "The Lego Movie.

A. P Stan-cyclopedia Yongguk stans: Calm, strong and steady, they hardly ever waver from Bbang. Despite the truly harrowing times they’ve experienced - they, like their bias, can always be counted on to be sage, positive and mostly relaxed. They give great advice and are fun, and even giddy, once you crack them open. Also, watching the YAMAZAKI-meltdown of 2017 was downright hilarious. Yongguk stans are loyal, talented and truly good people. The glue that holds the fandom together. Majority ship: Banghim or Banglo. But arguments can be made for Bangdae and Bangjae. Strong arguments. Also Tigguk, obviously. Majority bias-wrecker: Himchan, Daehyun and Youngjae. The other two are their babies, and always will be.  Hicmhan stans: They will defend and protect Himchan to their very last breath. And quite rightly so. No one has gotten more industry and fandom crap than him. While the rest of us are watching Himchan glide along like the swan he is, all beautiful and elegant, slightly goofy (in the neck), they are underwater, watching as his legs work furiously and without end as they propel him along. Don’t mess with Himchan stans. But love them, cause they’re great. And would probably defend you, if you ever needed it.  Majority ship: Himup. Duh.  Majority bias-wrecker: Youngjae. But they love Daehyun too. Daehyun stans: Very active. Very sociable.  Extremely vocal. Always screaming about Daehyun, thinking about screaming about Daehyun, dreaming about thinking about screaming about Daehyun. They admire Daehyun’s many talents but they are also the among the first ones to admire all the members for their numerous talents. If BABYz were a cake, they’d be the rainbow sprinkles on top, i. e they’re delightful and there are a million of them. Majority ship: All Daehyun ships are evenly represented (more opportunity to scream about Daehyun) Majority bias-wrecker: None. Unless you count blonde Daehyun. AND THEY DO. Youngjae stans: Hyper-aware that they are a slightly smaller group. Painfully aware that Yoo Youngjae is everyone’s bias-wrecker as opposed to straight-up bias. Furiously aware that sometimes ‘jae’ is seen as just a part of ‘daejae’….. But, if anyone can clue in the clueless, it’s Youngjae stans. Blessed with real, farm-to-table talent, the artists that stan Youngjae know he’s on the cusp of true greatness, and that it’s only a matter of time. He’ll get everyone in the end.  Majority ship: Younglo and Daejae (although Bangjae, Himjae and Youngup are all on the rise. Seriously, everyone loves Youngjae)  Majority bias-wrecker: They love everyone. But they are in love with Youngjae. Tbh, that face/shoulder combo would leave anyone destroyed.  Jongup stans: Like the man they stan, they’re a quirky bunch. Quietly, yet constantly, supportive of the whole group, they spend their time lolling about, not afraid to gush over another member or gently rib Uppie for his more gobbish ways. And then stage-Jongup appears. Mr. Moon pulls one pose, and they all lose their collective shit. Screaming, weeping and in various stages of dying, the cry often heard is ‘i can’t, I can’t, I CAN’T’. It’s down to a science.  Majority ship: Daeup (Daejong? ). Either way they love it. Also Himup, because even his stans accept that no one will ever love Jongup as much as Himchan does. No one. Ever. Majority bias-wrecker: Daehyun or Yongguk. The two extremes. Zelo stans: Creative, sweet and kind. The kindest of kind. Their blogs are truly refreshing, drama-free spaces. Their total care and adoration of our youngest sometimes seems beyond words, like they’ve wrapped him up in fluffy clouds and quietly watch over him as he sleeps. So instead of loud flailing, we are blessed with beautiful edits and gifsets. And Mochii. Lots and lots of Mochii. Majority ship: Banglo or Younglo (although Daelo is always hovering) Most likely due to the fact that although he’s everyone’s little brother, Yongguk and Youngjae are clearly his primary caregivers. Majority bias-wrecker: Daehyun, Jongup or Mochii (the bae) # StanBAP # SupportBABYz ❤ Boss Machina Grog is a literal mountain of hit-points and anger. He’s fast, strong, and difficult to hurt. A boss fight that would mostly come down to avoiding being hit or outsmarting him. He can grow to massive proportions and has access to many powerful weapons. No matter what magic or weapons you use, he’ll shrug it off easily. I’d suggest you flee, but Grog doesn’t like it when his playmates get away. Vax in a dark cave with high ceilings and no light. Extremely fast and can attack from any angle. If you don’t see him before he strikes, you won’t survive long enough to hit back. But is a glass canon. A few good hits is enough to break the raven’s wings if you can hit him in the first place. Vex in a dark forest. Similar to her brother, she can attack from most angles and is difficult to spot. You cannot hide from her keen eyes and your intentions will be clear as day. If you get separated from your group and can’t fly, you’ll quickly find an arrow in your heart. If you can ground her and get close, you may have a chance, if you avoid her dangerous little Trinket. Perhaps money would suffice her greed? If not, the forest’s brambles will restrain you until she finishes you off, leaving a freshly grown tree to mark your demise. Percy is a genius. A mad scientist who can build all kinds of traps in his battle area, Whitestone Castle. Loud explosions of fire and metal will slam into you every step you take from the labyrinth Percival calls home. The hex he lays on you will weaken you, and he’ll make sure he takes advantage of it. He’s unnaturally lucky and dangerous. I’d recommend getting close or trying to talk to him. In both cases, Diplomacy will not be on your side, and neither will the law. Pike is a surprising foe. With the power of a divine god by her side and immense strength for her size you will find that you’ve underestimated her. Every time you think you’re getting somewhere she heals herself and stands again. Even if you do manage to take her down to zero, divine fire will scorch you in an explosion and she’ll rise again for round two. She’s not particularly fast with her armor, and she won’t surprise you, but don’t let this small tank call her goddess for help. If she answers, you’ll never stand a chance. Scanlan is a silly little man. He has tricks, traps, and troubling ideas. He can become an ancient dinosaur capable of destroying an entire building. Create a massive hand that can crush you into paste. If you bring friends and hope that more targets will make it easier, you may find yourself fighting who you once called a friend. Perhaps you’ll sneakily capture his daughter and demand he surrender. Just make sure the locks are strong, otherwise you’ll deal with two Shorthaults instead of one. Keyleth, Voice of the Tempest, will be your biggest trial. She can take any form. Dragon, Demon, Beholder, Elementals, and monstrous Beasts. That’s if she wants to play with her food of course. If she was really interested in killing you, she wouldn’t change at all. Instead, she’d summon an elemental and the forces of nature against you. Spell after spell will strike you. You might be shocked by lightning, you could be withered away, a massive tidal wave can sweep you away, perhaps she’ll have mercy and simply drain your mind of thought and make you no more than a stupid doll. She will live longer than the next ten generations of your family and will never get any easier to defeat. Incredibly wise and self-aware, tricking her will prove difficult. She may seem awkward or clumsy, but don’t mistake that for weakness. Taryon is Glass Joe. It’s the robot to watch out for. Just fight him underwater, and watch the ring. A BUNCH OF MONSTROUS WHUMP SCENARIOS (because I am very into creepy fantasy monsters rn) -a monster that can turn invisible surprises the character and uses its ability to its advantage. -a monster grabs the character from the shore and pulls them underwater while the friends watch in horror, waiting for the character to resurface. -a monster that feeds off the victim’s life energy attacks the character, and even though they are saved before it’s too late, they’re never the same again.  -a monster that shapeshifts into the character’s worst fears torments them.  -a monster able to shapeshift into the character’s friends makes the captured character fight their own “friends”.  -a creature that seems harmless at first, but that’s only an act to lure the characters into a trap. -a creature that is able to blend in with the surrounding area so well, it’s basically invisible… until it wants to be seen.  -the character falls into a cave where they are quickly surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of teeny tiny crawling poisonous monsters more like spiders than actual supernatural creatures. -an absolutely enormous monster the size of a mountain attacks the whole city. It’s slow but unstoppable and it will crush anything it comes in contact with. pls ship taejin more i just watched jin’s graduation vlive again and damn, the amount of taejin gives me life. tae couldn’t keep his hands off of jin. he wiped jin’s lip and licked his finger 😭they hugged thrice 😭but of course no one talked about it enough. if it was a maknae line ship everyone would talk about it 😔 i can’t ship maknae line with each other i need more people to ship taejin and jinkook. the amount of jinkook and taejin fics are sad. i probably read them all. even the ones with the bad writing 😩it’s really boring not shipping maknae line with each other. i’m a hyung line trash so my ship has to include at least one hyung ☺️i wish people would appreciate taejin though. they have such good moments. they even kissed ON THE LIPS(AT LEAST the corner of the mouth) jin kissed jungkook too. i am sick of being thirsty for taejin/jinkook ☹️ Anathema: A tire iron, a pen that writes underwater… a watch with no battery… [flipping through best of Queen tapes] and I half expected Liszt… you are without doubt the worst demon I have ever heard of Crowley: But you *have* heard of me zahraxtipo  asked: Po giving Tigress mouth-to-mouth resuscitation! Ok, hann meinar heilt sikkurt okkurt annad sannleikin er : fuck it!1. Movie watch richard jeweller. I remember exactly where I was when this story broke and the TV I left on woke me up in the middle of the night. I live in Europe and my only remembrance of the Atlanta games was there was a bombing and the guy that found the bomb planted the bomb. Blood media.

The 'F in FIB is for FRAMED. Decade after decade, it's the same travesty. This kind of art is necessary. Movie watch richard jewellers. Roxy leading this show is a mistake; she just tries to hammer her point across. I would like more of an actual round table discussion. Not an oh you disagree with me let me keep going even though you already know where I'm coming from smh.

This will be in theaters about the time the next FBI scandal is blowing wide open. Screw You Bob! Kapernick said the NFL inserted Contract Language in a Waiver that gave the NFL control of some parts of Kapernicks future in the NFL. Just to workout for scouts at an NFL venue. Moved continued the workout at a different location. NOT that he intended to use the tryout as an Ongoing Political Platform, Bob. You should just say Colin got Black Balled, and shut up. If it was anyone else but trumpF, Jones in texASS, NFL suck ups and swallowers, might be. Should be Still Playing.

It's bs if Kaepernick don't play. and continue to take a 's a rap. Watch richard jewell movie. Watch movie richard jewell. NBC involved in smearing the reputation of a honest to God hero, I guess it goes deeper in their DNA than we thought. No wonder they wind up getting the likes of Brian Williams, Al Sharpton, Chris Matthews as their spokespersons. Dont know who is worse, Democrat politicians or their media partners. No one wants to talk about all the cancerous material in the buildings that end up killing a bulk of the survivors. that dust from those buildings killed a bunch of people! it's not a secret and people are not even angry.

Movie watch richard jewellery. What an appropriate movie considering the times that we're in. Thank you, Mr Eastwood. 23 years later and you still cant trust the FBI. FBI, OPEN UP. Movie Watch Richard jewellery uk. Watch richard jewell full movie online free. Richard jewell movie watch.

He looks like such a nice guy he kinda looks like a human teddy bear 🥰. The FBI all but ruined this mans life and in the end they never exonerated him. our guys have been this way for decades they are the ones who are above the law but they have the dirt on to many people they will never face the justice they so richly deserve. 9:20 is that what a handwritten letter looks like? Those agents must have perfect calligraphy skills...

I think theyre getting away from the main point. Regardless whether she used herself in a sexual nature to obtain information she still ran a story that wasnt based on truth and along with the FBI put Richard Jewell and his family through a nightmarish ordeal. The character might have been two dimensional but maybe the real Kathy was a two dimensional person. I sure as hell dont know and neither does anyone else unless they knew her in real life. It is very unfortunate that she passed, along with the real Richard Jewell. Watch richard jewell full movie. Watch richard jewell movie online. Movie Watch Richard jeweller. I just watched the '30 for 30 Judging Jewel' special. Absolutely heartbreaking. This man was/is a hero. Well yes,but actually no. This 60 minutes story neglected to say that 6 years after the bombing Eric Rudolf admitted to planting of the bomb.

This actually has made me emotional.

Közvetlenül a háború utáni Magyarországon egy magányos, finom lelkű nőgyógyász rendelőjébe elhoznak egy kissé dühödt, késő pubertás korral és családja elvesztésével küzdő vadóc kamaszlányt. Az orvos személyében a kislány azonnal felismeri a lelki társat. Hiszen egymástól függetlenül ugyanazt a traumát élték át, szeretteik elvesztését. A bugyuta tartalma mellett borzalmas a főszereplő választás. Azt tudom mondani, mint a Micsoda nőben a férfi a nőnek. Nagyon szép magas, mutatós nő vagy, csak ne dobáld magad. Itt azt mondanám, nagyon szép fogsorod van, csak csukd be néha a szád.

A wellplayed touching film. Good acting, Good subject, Good shooting. Recommended. Zs1dók szenvedtek zs1dóktól! Fúúúú de szőőőőőőrnyűűűű dráma.

While many holocaust survivors openly express rage and uncontrolled bitterness towards their persecutors, other survivors display only an emotional deadness and a pervasive feeling of being alone and scared. In the movie "Fateless, Gyuri, a young man sent to Buchenwald, moves from a childlike innocence to world-weariness in the span of one year. When he comes home, he feels more alone than he did at the camp and even expresses a sort of homesickness for the camaraderie he felt. Hungary's entry for Best International Feature Film at the 2019 Academy Awards, Barnabás Tóth's ( Camembert Rose" Those Who Remained (Akik maradtak) asks us to rethink our idea of what liberation meant to those just released from the camps. Based on the 2004 novel of the same name by Zsuzsa F. Varkonyi and set in Budapest between 1948 and 1953, the suffering of the Holocaust years are deeply etched on the face of Doctor Aládar (Aldo) Körner (Károly Hajduk, One Day. a slender, gaunt man of about forty who is going through the motions of his Ob-Gyn practice at a Budapest hospital, but the look in his eyes cannot hide the trauma of his wife's death and that of his two young boys.
Coming from the Israelite Community Orphanage, Klára (Abigél Szõke, X - The eXploited. a mature-looking 16-year-old girl, sees Dr. Körner, for a gynecological exam to find out why her puberty has come so late. At first, angry, fearful, and wound into a tight knot, when she reaches out and suddenly embraces the doctor, it is clear that she is seeking more than an exam but a respite from her desperate loneliness. Outspoken in her disdain for her classmates at school and her great-aunt Olgi (Mari Nagy, Budapest Noir" with whom she lives, Klára only begins to reveal her repressed humanity when Aldo responds to her like a fellow human being in pain, not a wounded animal.
Bringing the film to life with her tremendously affecting performance, Szõke refuses to return to Olgi even though she loves her and wants her to be happy. Instead, she moves in with Aldo who acts as a foster father, sharing custody with her aunt. He makes the rules, however, and is strict about physical contact, especially when she crawls into bed with him at night. Gradually, both open up though to each other.
